SJMA offers many ways to get kids outside, learning about our environment. From preschoolers to teenagers, we have something for all youth.
Teen/Tween Backpacking Trip for ages 12 – 15
Are you looking for a fun summer trip for an outdoorsy teenager? A 3 day adventure along the Fish Creek Trail, northeast of Dolores. This trip will include time for some side hikes, ecology lessons, and self reflection. Led by certified interpreter MK Gunn and other local outdoor affiliates. Participants will need to carry most of their own provisions and gear (equipment list available). Free gear rentals may be available. Some parents will be needed to help with transportation.
Deadline to register is June 2nd, and mandatory meeting June 3rd.
Little Legs Adventures
Fridays, June 10, 17, 24 & July 1, 10 am—11 am
Outdoor fun for toddlers and preschoolers. Bring your kids for one or all of these adventures, taking place at Denny Lake in Cortez. Dig in the mud, chase insects, use a magnifying lens, and have fun outside! Pre-registration is requested as space is limited.
Bugs & Buddies at Cortez Rec Center’s Playground Days
Wednesdays, June 15, 29, July 6 & 13
Sign your kids (ages 5—10) up for Playground Days at the Cortez Rec Center on these Wednesdays, and they’ll learn all about insects and their relatives! Activities led by Gabi and helpers.

Teen Backpacking Trip for ages 15 – 18
Are you looking for a fun summer trip for an outdoorsy teenager? This 3 day trip starts at Lime Mesa Trailhead. We will camp near City Reservoir and day hike up along Silver Mesa. Open to ages 15—18 and led by certified interpreter MK Gunn and other local outdoor affiliates. Participants will need to carry most of their own provisions and gear (equipment list available). Free gear rentals may also be available. Some parents will be needed to help with transportation. Deadline to register is July 20th! There will be a mandatory meeting on July 21st. This trip will be more challenging than the June trip and previous backpacking experience is strongly recommended.
Read with a Ranger – Where Reading Comes ‘Natureally’!
Wednesdays, June 8, July 13, & August 10, 2 pm– 3:30 pm
Join Ranger Brandon from the U.S. Forest Service as he reads nature-themed stories and provides activities based on the books. These free programs take place at the Ruby M. Sisson Memorial Library meeting room in Pagosa Springs. Recommended for 6 to 10 year olds. No parents/caregivers required at this age.
