Crosscut Saw and Ax Training Class

This class is for SJMA volunteers who are interested in learning to use and maintain crosscut saws safely and efficiently. All participants’ skills will be evaluated. Successful participants will get a recommendation toward certification by the U.S. Forest Service.

The course includes completing prerequisites, a classroom session, a field training session, and field testing.

Prerequisites

Current First Aid and CPR certification, and Online Crosscut Sawyer course

  • Allow 8 hours of computer time to complete the sawyer course, found at www.umt.edu/crosscut-sawyer.
  • A written test is required at the end of the online course before you continue to the classroom and field sessions.
  • Please submit documentation of completion of the online Crosscut Sawyer course, first aid and CPR certification to Marly Saunders at msaunders@sjma.org ASAP.

Schedule

  • June 6, Tuesday – 5 to 8 pm at San Juan National Forest Headquarters (15 Burnett Ct, Durango, CO): Classroom session to review the latest developments in situational awareness, and ax and saw care. Bring water, leather gloves, notepad and pen, and questions.
  • June 7 and 8, Wednesday and Thursday – 8-4 pm Field session, location TBD: Bring all-leather work boots or hiking boots with a non-skid sole, leather gloves, hardhat, sunglasses, first aid kit, water and lunch in a daypack. Wear long sleeve shirt and long pants. We will focus on bucking logs and down trees, and deal with a variety of situations. Safety is essential. Personal Protective Equipment as listed above is required.

Please bring crosscut saws and related equipment (wedges, lubricant, axes, sheaths). If you don’t have them, they can be provided.
