National Public Lands Day – Cross Canyon Wilderness Study Area

September 28 @ 7:30 am - 3:00 pm

San Juan Mountains Association in partnership with Canyons of the Ancients National Monument (BLM) will host a National Public Lands Day (NPLD) event at the trailhead to the Cross Canyon Wilderness Study Area. Volunteers will be installing an interpretive sign, replacing old and missing signage, gate and fence work and naturalizing the old two track road. Project work is considered moderate to difficult work.

In addition, Kristie Arrington, retired archaeologist, will be on site to do some interpretation of the cultural sites at the trailhead. In addition, Chris Barns, retired Wilderness Specialist, will discuss the Wilderness Study Area protection significance.

Volunteers will meet at Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center, 27501 Hwy 184, Dolores, CO at 7:30 am to carpool – 4X4 vehicle recommended. We will return to the visitor center about 3 pm. For safety volunteers must wear sturdy shoes, long pants, gloves, sunglasses and bring day packs with lunch, snacks and water.

Tools and t-shirts will be provided for registered volunteers. Volunteers also receive a coupon for 1 free entry or day use at
participating agencies.

National Public Lands Day is an opportunity to enjoy and give back to the public lands we all enjoy. It is the largest single day
volunteer event in the nation. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers donate their time to NPLD. Locally this is SJMA’s 21st
anniversary of providing NPLD projects on public lands. Please join us!

Volunteer sign-up limited to 25.

Registration required.
