SUMMARY:Geology Hike: Ice Caves Loop\, Pagosa
DESCRIPTION:Again this year\, SJMA in conjunction with the US Forest Service\, Pagosa and Bayfield Ranger Districts\, is hosting educational geology hikes\, free for the public\, from May through October. These interpretive hikes\, led and presented by geologists Dave Bouquet and Scott McAllisters\, will be in an area of the San Juan National Forest rich with evidence of earth’s geologic history from some of the area’s oldest metamorphic rocks\, to Cretaceous seaways\, to Tertiary volcanoes\, to modern glacial deposits. \nFissuring Out the Past \nWhen you hear the term “ice cave”\, thoughts of dripping ice-encrusted stalactites clinging to the icy blue ceiling of a glacial cavern may come to mind. This hike is not that\, yet it’s fascinating in its own right. Not really caves\, these are more like giant cracks; fissures in the underlying Dakota sandstone. Varying in size from one to eight feet wide\, up to a hundred feet long and 30 feet deep\, these chasms are cool year-round and often hold snow well into the summer. Layers of rock tell a story as old as time. Your guide will briefly explain regional geology and Morrison\, Dakota and Mancos stratigraphy (Jurassic/Cretaceous) and also explain theory for the origin of ice caves. Included is a side hike to a stunning clifftop grand vista of the San Juan Mountains in the distance\, and deep riparian river valleys below. \nTrail Information: This is a loop route\, partially off trail\, with sustained\, moderately difficult inclines/declines\, on rocky terrain near high cliffs. Hike time is approximately 4 hours total\, 3.5 miles round trip\, and about 500 ft. vertical ascent. We will finish at the parking lot just after noon\, and there is a picnic area nearby if you wish to bring your own lunch to eat after the hike.  We will have a snack break along the trail at a beautiful overlook spot. \nWhen: May 21\, 2026 from 9:00am – 1:30pm \nWhere: Group meet at the Coyote Hill Trailhead\, 6 miles north of Pagosa Springs on County Road 600. After a brief introduction\, we will caravan to our next stop aprox. 20 miles further up the road. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nLayers of cool and warm clothing\nWater (1/2 to 1 liter per hour)\nSturdy\, supportive footwear\nLunch/snacks\nRain jacket or poncho\nHiking Daypack\nSunscreen and sunglasses\nCamera\n\nCost: Free\, $10 donation is greatly appreciated! \nPlease Note: Although pets are allowed in the national forest\, we ask that pets be left at home as a courtesy to the other guests in the group. \nRegistration is required. Spaces limited to 25 attendees. \n[vc_btn title=”REGISTER TODAY” color=”green” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsjma.app.neoncrm.com%2Fnp%2Fclients%2Fsjma%2FeventRegistration.jsp%3Fevent%3D4883%26||target:%20_blank|”]\n

SUMMARY:Night Sky at the Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:Join SJMA for an evening of night sky wonder! Luann Andrew\, an avid and passionate amateur astronomer\, is hosting a series of night sky events at the Nature Center this year. She has been a Park Ranger at Mesa Verde National Park for the last 14 years where she has enjoyed working as a night sky ranger sharing dark skies with a myriad of visitors. Hearing people say “OH WOW! “ as they discover their Cosmos makes her truly happy! \nExactly what we will do each evening depends entirely on what the ever-changing night sky offers us that particular night. There will be a visual telescope and a deep sky “smart” telescope. If we have a moon\, we will explore that fascinating little satellite of Earth along with other targets we can see that evening. We will have a great time exploring the night sky together! \n\nWe will take a tour of the evening sky with a green laser pointer star hopping from one constellation to the next.\nIf we have clear dark skies\, we will peer as deep into the universe as we can see that night.\nWe will discuss the importance of DARK SKIES to our natural environment.\nWe will think about what ancient cultures right here on this land saw in the cosmos.\n\nWhen: Friday\, May 29\, 2026 from 8:30 pm – 10:00 pm; Please arrive at 8:30 pm.  Kindly be on time. \nWhere: Meet in the parking lot of  Durango Nature Center\, 63 County Road 310\, Durango\, CO. Please back your car into its parking spot so lights will not blind telescope users later. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nRed light or headlamp – No white lights\, please. White lights ruin our night vision.\nChair\nBinoculars\nWarm clothes\, shoes\, hats\, gloves and socks.\nWater\n\nDetails: \n\nAges 6 or older\nThere is a Porta John\, but no water\, and no overhead white safety lights.\nSorry\, but DO NOT BRING DOGS!\n\nCost: Free\, $10 donation is greatly appreciated! \nRegistration is required. Spaces limited to 15 attendees. If you sign up but then need to cancel\, please send a message to info@sjma.org to make sure we can open your spot up to others. \n[vc_btn title=”REGISTER TODAY” color=”green” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsjma.app.neoncrm.com%2Fnp%2Fclients%2Fsjma%2FeventRegistration.jsp%3Fevent%3D4933%26||target:%20_blank|”]

\n\nWe will take a tour of the evening sky with a green laser pointer star hopping from one constellation to the next.\nIf we have clear dark skies\, we will peer as deep into the universe as we can see that night.\nWe will discuss the importance of DARK SKIES to our natural environment.\nWe will think about what ancient cultures right here on this land saw in the cosmos.\n\nWhen: Saturday\, June 13\, 2026 from 9:00 pm – 10:30 pm; Please arrive at 9:00 pm. \n[vc_btn title=”REGISTER TODAY” color=”green” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsjma.app.neoncrm.com%2Fnp%2Fclients%2Fsjma%2FeventRegistration.jsp%3Fevent%3D4938%26||target:%20_blank|”]

SUMMARY:Tree Walks & Talks: Role of Fire\, Lower Hermosa
DESCRIPTION:Ever notice trees while you’re out and about and wish you knew more about them? Join Elli Morris\, a tree lover with a Master of Forestry and extensive training in post-disturbance forest restoration\, for SJMA’s new Tree Walks & Talks interpretive series. These wanderings will focus on site-specific trees and our relationship with them. From fire adaptations to tree architecture to internal antifreeze\, appreciating trees can make any hike more enjoyable. Come be impressed not just with tree intelligence but the role trees play in our lives – and the roles we play in theirs. \nRole of Fire in the Lives of Trees\nIt’s been 8 years since the 416 fire. What species are being ‘recruited’\, by whom\, and did they get a sign-on bonus?! As we explore which species are returning to the land\, we’ll discuss nuances of fire\, floods\, and infrastructure. A bit of forestry lingo will be tossed in\, hopefully along with a scattering of wildflowers. \nWhen: June 14\, 2026 | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM \nWhere: Meet at the parking lot of the Lower Hermosa Creek Campground parking area (37°27’14.4″N 107°51’23.7″W) \nWhat to Bring: \n\nPlenty of water\, snacks or lunch\nHat\, sunscreen\, weather-appropriate layers\nHiking shoes\n\nCost: Free! A $10 donation is appreciated to support our public programs. \nRegistration Required: Space is limited to 10 attendees \n[vc_btn title=”REGISTER TODAY” color=”green” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsjma.app.neoncrm.com%2Fnp%2Fclients%2Fsjma%2FeventRegistration.jsp%3Fevent%3D5523%26||target:%20_blank|”]\nElli Morris received her Master of Forestry from NAU in 2022\, receiving extensive training in post-disturbance forest restoration. She’s a member of the La Plata County Tree Study Group. Elli’s biggest intrigue with trees is learning (and sharing) the multitude of skills trees employ for thriving in their habitat. She cannot recall how many trees she’s climbed but for sure she has a photo of at least one tree from the 60 countries and territories she’s visited.

SUMMARY:Geology Hike: San Juan River Walk\, Pagosa
DESCRIPTION:Again this year\, SJMA in conjunction with the US Forest Service\, Pagosa and Bayfield Ranger Districts\, is hosting educational geology hikes\, free for the public\, from May through October. These interpretive hikes\, led and presented by geologists Dave Bouquet and Scott McAllister\, will be in an area of the San Juan National Forest rich with evidence of earth’s geologic history from some of the area’s oldest metamorphic rocks\, to Cretaceous seaways\, to Tertiary volcanoes\, to modern glacial deposits. \nPagosa Hot Springs\, San Juan River Walk\, Reservoir Hill\, and the Story of the Mancos Shale \nThe world’s deepest geothermal hot spring is the Mother Spring aquifer located in Pagosa Springs\, Colorado\, USA. It is certified by the Guinness World Records\, with a measured depth exceeding 1002 ft (305 meters)\, though it’s true\, absolute bottom remains unknown.  When did it form and why is it there?  Your guide will explain it’s volcanic origin stemming for the largest ever volcanic eruption by volume in North America which created the San Juan Mountains.  We’ll walk along the beautiful San Jan River through downtown Pagosa Springs and then up onto Reservoir Hill where you’ll have an amazing view overlooking the town and of the San Juan Mountains and Pagosa Peak.  The guide will explain the origin of the black cliffs of the Mancos Shale which underlies the river’s course through the town. \nTrail Information: This is a loop route\, partially paved and partially rough trail.  Hike time is approximately 3 hours total\, ~4.5 miles round trip\, and about 350 ft. vertical ascent. We will walk along the river\, then go over Reservoir Hill and make a loop through the downtown area.  There are multiple picnic areas nearby if you wish to bring your own lunch to eat after the hike or you can grab a bite at numerous nearby restaurants. \nWhen: June 18\, 2026 from 9:00am – 12:00 pm \nWhere: Group will meet at the Mary Fisher Park parking lot (on San Juan Street near the restrooms)\, downtown Pagosa Springs. Please note\, the primary bridge over the San Juan River in downtown Pagosa Springs is closed due to construction. As such\, to reach the Mary Fisher Park meeting point (near restrooms and changing rooms for Public Hot Springs)\, you will need to use the “8th Street Detour Route”. This might require an extra 5-10 minutes depending on traffic \nWhat to Bring: \n\nLayers of cool and warm clothing\nWater (1/2 to 1 liter per hour)\nSturdy\, supportive footwear\nLunch/snacks\nRain jacket or poncho\nHiking Daypack\nSunscreen and sunglasses\nCamera\n\nCost: Free\, $10 donation is greatly appreciated! \nPlease Note: Although pets are allowed along the rout\, we ask that pets be left at home as a courtesy to the other guests in the group. \nRegistration is required. Spaces limited to 25 attendees. Registration closes at 4pm on June 17th\, but walkups are welcome. \n[vc_btn title=”REGISTER TODAY” color=”green” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsjma.app.neoncrm.com%2Fnp%2Fclients%2Fsjma%2FeventRegistration.jsp%3Fevent%3D4888%26||target:%20_blank|”]\n

SUMMARY:Tree Walks & Talks: Are You Lost?
\nAre You Lost?\nTrees – their species\, architecture\, and neighbors – might be able to help you find your way out of the woods. Or\, the trees might just encourage you to hang out a little longer\, once you learn more about them! Elbert Creek\, with its variety of plant life communities and abundance of tree species\, is a great place to delve into tricks of reading trees. Vanpool with SJMA (space dependent) or meet at the Elbert Creek trailhead parking lot (near Needles Gas Station.) \nWhen: Saturday\, July 11\, 2026 | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM \nWhere: Elbert Creek Trail parking area\, near Needles Gas Station \nCarpool Option: If you would like to meet at SJMA headquarters (15 Burnett Ct\, Durango) at 9:00am to carpool\, email the guide\, Elli at epm72@nau.edu. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nBring bug stuff – the trail starts in dense forest with dense mosquitoes to match\nPlenty of water\, snacks or lunch\nHat\, sunscreen\, weather-appropriate layers\nHiking shoes\n\nCost: Free! A $10 donation is appreciated to support our public programs. \nRegistration Required: Space is limited to 10 attendees. Registration closes on July 10th at 4pm. \n[vc_btn title=”REGISTER TODAY” color=”green” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsjma.app.neoncrm.com%2Fnp%2Fclients%2Fsjma%2FeventRegistration.jsp%3Fevent%3D5528%26||target:%20_blank|”]\nElli Morris received her Master of Forestry from NAU in 2022\, receiving extensive training in post-disturbance forest restoration.

SUMMARY:Geology Hike: Ancient Rocks of the Vallecito Valley
DESCRIPTION:SJMA in conjunction with the US Forest Service\, Pagosa and Bayfield Ranger Districts\, is hosting educational geology hikes\, free for the public\, from May through October. \n“Trail as Old as Time” – Ancient Rocks of the Vallecito Valley Geology Hike \nThe Spanish name Vallecito (“Via-seeto”)\, meaing “Little Valley” is an apt name for this valley hike\, yet the views along the way are anything but little. Following Vallecito Creek\, the trail begins easy\, flat and meadering\, then begins to climb through a deep canyon with ponderosa pines\, aspens\, and conifers. \nDuring the hike\, volunteer geologist Dave Bouquet will explain the rich geologic history of the area\, and guests will view some of the oldest rocks in the San Juans. You will discover a unique rock called the Vallecito Creek Metaconglomerate\, which is nearly 2 billion years old. Your guide will briefly explain the regional geology of the area and explain how metamorphic rocks form. This area was glaciated during the last ice age and we’ll encounter some evidence of that. It is common to encounter the crimson columbine (aquilegia Formosa) along the trail\, as well as a variety of bird species. \nTrail Information: This is an out and back\, moderate level hike\, approximately 5 miles round trip with about 500ft of elevation gain. The hike has some relatively safe cliff edge exposure in a few spots – maybe a consideration for those with a fear of heights. Depending on water levels\, there may be an easy side creek crossing (stepping stones and logs). The group will hike to a picturesque spot adjacent to a small waterfall\, have lunch (pack some lightweight trail chow) and return. With information stops and lunch\, the hike is expected to take ~4 hours. \nWhen: July 16\, 2025 from 9am – 1pm \nWhere: Vallecito Creek Trailhead (near the public restrooms in the Vallecito Creek Campground). From Bayfield\, drive north on Colorado 501 for ~18 miles\, then turn left onto Colorado 500\, in ~3 miles you will arrive at the TH parking lot (on the left\, adjacent to the public restrooms). \nRegistration is full. If you are still interest\, feel free to fill out our waitlist. \n[vc_btn title=”WAITLIST” color=”green” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsjma.app.neoncrm.com%2Fnp%2Fclients%2Fsjma%2FeventRegistration.jsp%3Fevent%3D4893%26||target:%20_blank|”]\n
