SUMMARY:Geology: Aspens & South San Juans\, V Rock (rescheduled from Oct 1st)
DESCRIPTION:SJMA in conjunction with the US Forest Service\, Pagosa and Bayfield Ranger Districts\, is hosting educational geology hikes\, free for the public\, from May through October. These interpretive hikes\, led and presented by geologists Dave Bouquet and Scott McAllister\, will be in an area of the San Juan National Forest rich with evidence of earth’s geologic history from some of the area’s oldest metamorphic rocks\, to Cretaceous seaways\, to Tertiary volcanoes\, to modern glacial deposits. \n“Golden Aspens and Geology of the South San Juans” – V Rock Trail Hike \nThis time we will be climbing through endless stands of golden aspens to an amazing series of overlooks at the top of the V Rock trail. Along the way\, the guide will describe how the San Jan Mountains were created and how this southern part of the range differs from main body of the San Juans. \nTrail Description: This is an ~5 mile out and back hike with approximately 1100 ft of elevation gain.   Most of the ascent is covered in the first 1.5 miles with the trail flattening at the top. With stops to discuss the geology of the area\, you can expect a time commitment of 4.5 hours. Pack a lunch as we will be taking a break at one of the overview stops up top. We’ll be watching for thunderstorm activity and may need to cut the hike shorter if weather conditions dictate. \nWhen: Friday October 9th\, 2026 from 9am – 1:30pm (rescheduled from October 1st due to trail and road conditions) \nWhere: Group will meet at the Buckles Lake Trailhead.  Head south on Highway 84 out of Pagosa Springs. After ~20 miles\, turn left on FR 663.  Follow FR 663 for 6.4 miles where there will be a turn to the right to stay on FR 663. After the right turn you’ll arrive at the trailhead is less than a mile. Note again\, on Google Maps and other navigation sites\, the trailhead is called Buckles Lake. Both the Buckles Lake and V Rock trails start there. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nLayers of cool and warm clothing\nWater (1/2 to 1 liter per hour)\nSturdy\, supportive footwear\nLunch/snacks\nRain jacket or poncho\nHiking Daypack\nSunscreen and sunglasses\nCamera\n\nCost: Free\, $10 donation is greatly appreciated! \nPlease Note: Although pets are allowed in the national forest\, we ask that pets be left at home as a courtesy to the other guests in the group. \nRegistration is required. Spaces limited to 25 attendees. Registration closes on October 8th\, 2026 at 4:00 pm. \n[vc_btn title=”REGISTER TODAY” color=”green” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsjma.app.neoncrm.com%2Fnp%2Fclients%2Fsjma%2FeventRegistration.jsp%3Fevent%3D4908%26||target:%20_blank|”]\n

Or do you simply wish for a fun and engaging exploration that you can share with your family? Join SJMA in Ouray for the fourth exploration hike of the Nature in Four-Season series. SUMMARY:CANCELED: Night Sky at the Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:Due to cloudy skies\, SJMA has canceled tonight’s night sky event. \nJoin SJMA for an evening of night sky wonder! Luann Andrew\, an avid and passionate amateur astronomer\, is hosting a series of night sky events at the Nature Center this year. She has been a Park Ranger at Mesa Verde National Park for the last 14 years where she has enjoyed working as a night sky ranger sharing dark skies with a myriad of visitors. Hearing people say “OH WOW! “ as they discover their Cosmos makes her truly happy! \nExactly what we will do each evening depends entirely on what the ever-changing night sky offers us that particular night. There will be a visual telescope and a deep sky “smart” telescope. If we have a moon\, we will explore that fascinating little satellite of Earth along with other targets we can see that evening. We will have a great time exploring the night sky together! \n\nWe will take a tour of the evening sky with a green laser pointer star hopping from one constellation to the next.\nIf we have clear dark skies\, we will peer as deep into the universe as we can see that night.\nWe will discuss the importance of DARK SKIES to our natural environment.\nWe will think about what ancient cultures right here on this land saw in the cosmos.\n\nWhen: Monday October 12th\, 2026 from 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm; Please arrive at 7:30 pm.  Kindly be on time. \nWhere: Meet in the parking lot of  Durango Nature Center\, 63 County Road 310\, Durango\, CO. Please back your car into its parking spot so lights will not blind telescope users later. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nRed light or headlamp – No white lights\, please. White lights ruin our night vision.\nChair\nBinoculars\nWarm clothes\, shoes\, hats\, gloves and socks.\nWater\n\nDetails: \n\nAges 6 or older\nThere is a Porta John\, but no water\, and no overhead white safety lights.\nSorry\, but DO NOT BRING DOGS!\n\nCost: Free\, $10 donation is greatly appreciated!
