John Malloy
North Region Program Coordinator
As our North Region Program Coordinator, John will play a key role in advancing SJMA’s mission on the northern region of the San Juans by engaging the public through education, volunteerism, and stewardship.
John Malloy grew up in Southeast Michigan exploring the fragmented forests that once covered the Midwest. He graduated from Colorado State University with a B.S. in Biology and was an instructor with the CSU Outdoor Program. During this time in Ft. Collins John was drawn to the peaks and crags of the Front Range and learned the craft of rock and ice climbing and backcountry skiing.
The pursuit of wildness and natural spaces is a foundation of Johns career. After many years as an environmental educator working with organizations such as Canyonlands Field Institute and The Wild Rockies Field Institute of the University of Montana John is now an instructor of Biology and Ecology at Colorado Mesa University.
John’s recent work with the CSU Rocky Mountain Naturalist program enlivened his interest in “the way of the naturalist” as well as crafting his nature journal. His teaching is focused on how students can develop awareness, empathy, and stewardship for the living earth.
