Deborah Powers
Board Member, At Large
Deb Powers has been a professional in the field of outdoor and experiential education for 30 years. Deb was first introduced to the outdoors as an undergraduate student in Vermont. Through those experiences she realized the power of the outdoors to connect with self, others, and the natural world. Upon graduation she decided working with youth in the outdoors was her “grassroots” approach to promote connection to the natural world and grow the next generation of environmental stewards. She spent ten years in the field instructing youth and adults on day trips to month-long expeditions across the country. After living on the road and across 13 states, Deb channeled her energy as a program director for an accredited K-12 outdoor education program. During that time, she completed her master’s and doctoral degrees in outdoor education and recreation administration, and educational leadership, respectively, and mentored graduate students in outdoor program administration on the side.
Deb moved to Durango in 2017 to join the Adventure Education Department faculty at Fort Lewis College. She enjoys mentoring the next generation with the aim of supporting folks in the pursuit of attaining a fulfilling and meaningful life. Being a facilitator and catalyst for awareness, growth, and transformation through adventure education is the most inspiring aspect of the profession. In addition to teaching, Deb enjoys giving back through service, which is why she is excited to share her expertise and passion on the board for the San Juan Mountain Association.
