Sand Canyon Wildflower Walk

May 17 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Celebrate Colorado Public Lands Day by joining us for a slow-paced, in-depth wildflower walk—not a hike- at Sand Canyon! Al Schneider, a true expert in Southwest Colorado wildflowers, will leading you on this walk, taking time to explore and identify local flora. Make sure you bring your curiosity and questions.

Please carpool if possible, and note that dogs are not allowed. This event may not be ideal for young children due to the slower pace and focused nature of the activity.

When: May 17, 2025 from 9:00am – 12:00pm (or longer if the group is interested)

Where: Sand Canyon and Rock Creek Trailhead (the second parking lot coming from Cortez)

What to Bring: If you have a hand lens, please bring it along. If not, no problem, we will have some hand lenses to share. In addition, bring plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, snacks and/or lunch, hiking shoes/boots appropriate for uneven rocky ground, and layers for the weather. Please note, there are no restrooms in Sand Canyon. No dogs, please. Families welcome!

Cost: Free, $10 donation is greatly appreciated!

Details: You’re welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy afterward, and don’t forget to dress appropriately for the weather and terrain.

We recommend checking out the Al Schneider’s SW Colorado Wildflower website ahead of time if you’d like a head start on some of the species we may see.
