Julie Campbell

Education Specialist

Julie spent her childhood on 20 acres in a small town in the Sierras, spending every spare moment rambling outdoors.  She wandered the oak-covered hills, explored the creek at the bottom of the hill for all the secrets it could reveal, and spent hours in her favorite oak tree, soaking up the stillness.  She also loved riding their horses as they symbolized the freedom she so craved, and her other passions were reading, and creating art.

Once she ‘grew up,’ Julie got her education degree, taught high school, and moved to seven states, uncovering her life’s purpose on this epic journey. The rich diversity of experiences, including teaching an outdoor low ropes course, becoming an EMT, being a AAA Roadside Technician, wildland firefighter for the Forest Service, etc., shaped her ability to accommodate many skillsets that serve her well now at SJMA.  The greatest impact that shaped her above all else, however, came from the indescribably precious responsibility of motherhood.  Gratitude runs deep for her now.

In 2022, her new family found Durango through a serious of beautiful synchronicities, and knew they had finally found the place they wanted to put down roots in.  In 2024, she was honored to find space (besides her commitment as a full-time mother, as well as her budding art business), to serve in the beloved SJMA.

Julie often says how lucky she feels, that she gets to serve on the SJMA Education Team, teaching outdoors throughout the region, and also serve at Durango Nature Center, as a steward and manager for a wide range of events, plant i.d. nature hikes, as well as nature preserve maintenance- great exercise!

On her own time, Julie adores the simple things in life- time with loved ones soaking up the sunshine, meditating and growing spiritually, gardening, and buying everything secondhand.  She also still loves hiking and camping, creating paintings, river dipping, and playing like a child.
