J Burnite
Visitor Information Services Director
In the mid-seventies, J Burnite’s parents brought him to Durango looking for a slower pace and the quiet, natural surroundings provided by the San Juan National Forest. As J grew up playing on the hillsides of Durango and learning to ski in the winters, he became an avid adventurer of the outdoors through running, nordic skiing and camping. He loves to spend time on outdoor excursions with his wife and daughter and is also a potter.
J brings his 27 years as a former educator to the Visitor Information Services (VIS) position. As the director of VIS he will promote the partnership with the San Juan National Forest to provide information to visitors of this area’s forests while sharing SJMA’s principles of “leave no trace” and “recreating responsibly”. In addition, he coordinates with the SJMA VIS staff in five public land offices.
Although, there is always still so much to see and experience, he is excited to share his experiences and knowledge of the regional forest with all folks who stop by or call.
